The following information is current as of December 31, 2008: With the grants made in 2008, there have
been 69 scholarships awarded since the Foundation’s inception,
- These
have been made to 50 Sunset graduates.
- The total amount awarded is $64,000+,
- Which is the result of income
derived from endowment funds from over 500 generous contributions from alumnae, foundations, teachers, staff members, and
friends.
The Sunset Lettermen & Friends had its fourth Golf Tournament, resulting in $6.500
being contributed to the Foundation‘s endowment funds. This brings the total contributed from this group to in
excess of $25,000. The fifth annual Tournament is scheduled for October 26, 2009. See “Fun Giving”
on this website for details. The Class of 1953 is the first class to contribute cumulatively in excess of
$50,000, the Platinum Contributor level, as a result of successful fund raising campaign, which ended 12/31/08. The Classes
of 1955, 1956, 1957 and Sunset Lettermen & Friends each have made contributions in 2008 that qualifies each for recognition
as Silver Contributors, in excess of $25,000 each.
The Board continued a program of allocating some of the Foundation's
earnings to students previously awarded grants, had progressed with their education, and needed additional financial assistance
to complete their education. It is anticipated that this will continue, as the results have not only been gratifying
but also in some cases the funds were urgently needed. These awards are made after a committee reviews the requests,
progress, etc from the students.
The funds continue to be primarily invested in government backed bonds and money
market funds to maximize the income available for distribution. Expenses continue to be minimal with the majority of
services being furnished “pro bono”.
