Golf Tournament in 2005 raised $8,000

More than 100 players participated in the first annual sunset lettermen and friends golf tournament and approximately 140 sunset folks attended the luncheon net proceeds went to the sunset foundation endowment fund to help send deserving Sunset graduates to college.

We promised a fun day of golf while noting that even non-golfers, by becoming a tee and/or hole sponsor, could help the foundation send even more deserving Sunset High School graduates to college.

The tournament, including some of the best leaders and athletes ever to attend Sunset, was held on October 21, 2005 at the Creek Course, Prestonwood Country Club in Dallas. In addition to providing great golfing competition, it was a super fun day of seeing long-time Sunset friends, making new Sunset friends, and trying to convince our respective Sunset schoolmates how much smarter, faster, better looking, etc., we were than they could ever remember, much less acknowledge!

Carl Warwick, Class of 1955 and a former outstanding Sunset baseball player, later had a very successful career as a professional big-league baseball player. After he retired from professional baseball, he directed golf tournaments for a number of years for professional baseball players. In order to help send deserving Sunset graduates to college, he graciously volunteered to direct the tournament and to provide net proceeds of the tournament to the Sunset Foundation Endowment.

The arrangement at Prestonwood was secured for us by Jimmy Powell, Class of '52 and a former outstanding golf and basketball player at Sunset. Jimmy, who played on the PGA Tour, later on the Senior Tour, and continues to play on the Super Senior Tour, played in the tournament.

Carl promised that a successful tournament would entice him to make it an annual affair. In view of the outstanding success, he has now committed to do so! That success is told in the following words of the Foundation Board tournament report to players and other participants.

2006 Tournament Planned for October
December, 2005

To: Those involved in the Sunset Lettermen and Friends Golf Tournament.

As the Sunset Foundation ends its 10th year of operation, it is our pleasure to report that we had an outstanding year due in large part to your participation in the Sunset Lettermen and Friends Golf Tournament at Preston Wood Country Club in late October.

In that regard, we enclose a statement from SUNSET LETTERMEN AND FRIENDS concerning the tax deductibility of your entry fee(s) and/or your purchase of a Sponsor Sign, and a Financial Report, detailing income and expenses. As you can see, the Sunset Lettermen and Friends Tournament produced a net income of $6,333.66, a check for which was presented to the Foundation. This has been placed in the Endowment Fund to produce income for scholarships for worthy Sunset Graduates or teachers, as determined by a Selection Committee each spring. Note that additional funds have been donated to the Foundation as a result of the Tournament … there have been several additional (to the $725 shown on the Financial Report) contributions, attributable to the Tournament, made direct to the Sunset Foundation, Inc. The Foundation Board and the students of Sunset cannot thank you enough for your participation!
When an endeavor like this is undertaken … note there were 102 entrants … many people are involved. With apologies to many that will be missed, special THANKS go to … Carl Warwick who suggested (and organized) the Tournament in connection with the Class of ‘55’s 50th Reunion, Bob Golden, the Lettermen and Friends’ CPA, who kept up with the money, Bob’s wife, Marla, who secured the gifts for longest drive, closest to the hole, etc., John Ford, whose generosity contributed materially to the gift certificates, Lee Smith, who spearheaded the successful registration of many/most of you, Don Martin, who, first, collected the money to repair the Sanger Trophy and, then, for allowing us to display it … I think all, especially, those that were responsible for the trophy being retired to Sunset really enjoyed seeing this magnificent piece of history … , Laura Dorenbecker, who, among other things, set up our computer data files, and, finally, to Jimmy Powell, for arranging the use of Preston Wood on a Friday (unheard of!) for our Tournament.

Carl has committed to heading up the arrangements for another Tournament next year, the proceeds of which will again benefit the SUNSET FOUNDATION … so, save the (approximate) date of late October, 2006. When we have a definite date, we will, of course, let you know.

Again, MANY THANKS!
